It's A Yard Sale-A-Palooza In The Two Rivers

ATTENTION TREASURE HUNTERS.

Two town-wide yard sales are scheduled for this weekend in the two river area with approximately 300 individual locations likely participating.

This Saturday Atlantic Highlands will hold its annual town-wide garage sale with approximately 75 families participating. Maps of locations will be made available the day of the event at Borough Hall on First Avenue in Atlantic Highlands.

Across the Oceanic Bridge, Fair Haven will host its first town-wide yard sale since 1999 and has issued approximately 200 permits for the event.

Following the success of the Tour de Fair Haven hosted by the Fair Haven Business Association, the organization decided to join in on the recent popularity of town-wide yard sales in the area.

"There's a lot of excitement," said FHBA President Michele Berger. "I think we'll reach 200 and that's pretty cool considering it's been a number of years since they've done this."

"I think it's typical Fair Haven," Berger added. "Everybody seems to get together" between the borough, the FHBA and residents.

According to Berger the approximately 200 permits issued is equal to 10 percent of the homes in Fair Haven. In addition to the 200 yard sales in the borough Fair Haven business will also be hosting a two-day sidewalk sale beginning on Friday with 50 businesses participating. The FHBA will be distributing "treasure maps" with the locations of each yard sale marked. The map is also posted on the borough's website. In addition to the map each location will be marked with an orange balloon to signify that locations participation.

Berger said that he did not expect the interest the idea received stating at the most recent borough council meeting that he believed only a handful of people would participate.

"I was surprised because we didn't really advertise it," Berger said. "I didn't think we'd have this many people. I'm pretty happy."

"This is a great opportunity for our residents and local businesses to work together to expose Fair Haven's great business district to a new audience," Mayor Michael Halfacre said. "In this economic environment, it is heartening to see our hard working local businesses receive support from our residents. Together we can continue to thrive."

The rain date for Atlantic Highlands is scheduled for Sunday May 16.

Fair Haven's rain date is the following weekend, May 22.

That's also the day that Highlands has scheduled their town-wide yard sale, which will take place May 23.
