Forum Helps Parents Learn Realities Of Teen Years

LITTLE SILVER - Red Bank Regional High School and the Shrewsbury Alliance will host "Surviving the Teen Years," a forum for parents on Thursday, March 25 from 6:30 to 10 p.m.

Keynote speaker is psychiatrist Dr. Rajiv Tony Juneja, who will discuss "The Adolescent Brain: When do Adolescent Issues Warrant Intervention - Medical and/ or Therapy?" After the keynote address parents will have a choice to attend two of six break-out sessions dealing with a host of current teen related topics conducted by local and county educational and law enforcement professionals, and clinicians from The Source, the high school's In School Youth Based Services Program.

The program welcomes all parents interested in learning more about the issues facing teens. Last year's Forum brought close to 200 parents from throughout Monmouth County.

Admission is free, refreshments and a vast array of resource materials will be provided.

Program coordinator, Karen Lloyd, chair of the Shrewsbury Alliance, says, "Our focus for the evening is on the positive. Most teenagers do not engage in risky behavior; however, we feel it is important for parents to educate themselves about what exists. The separate break-out sessions enable our parents to gravitate toward the subjects that most concern them. It is here that they are able to converse with our professionals in a more intimate atmosphere."

Break-out sessions include: Current Trends in Adolescent Behavior, Teens and the Internet/Digital Technology, Trends in Substance Abuse, Fostering Teen Independence: When to Hold on, When to Let Go -From High School to College, Law and Order: You and Your Adolescent and Historical Perspective: Beyond the Color Line/ Black Men Don't Cry: What Depression looks like in Black Boys.

The Forum will be bilingual. For information call (732) 842-8000 ext. 341.
