Catholic Schools Week Begins Jan. 31

Costumed children taking to the stage before elaborate sets to perform well-rehearsed numbers; students and teachers squaring off on the basketball court for intense - though friendly - competition, and science and technology exhibits filling hallways and auditoriums... these are just some of the many scenes that will unfold in Catholic schools throughout the Diocese of Trenton during Catholic Schools Week 2010.

Scheduled for Jan. 31 to Feb. 6, this national observance has as its theme "Catholic Schools - Dividends for Life," underscoring the investment that families and parish communities make in the life of a child by providing the opportunity for a Catholic education. Key among these "dividends," according to the National Catholic Education Association, which sponsors CSW along with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, are faith, knowledge, discipline and morals.

While the annual designation is often celebrated with funbased and even off-beat activities, such as Silly Hat Day and Turn Around Day (when students teach the teachers), Catholic Schools Week is most importantly a time for schools to showcase their academic, athletic and faith-based programs and curriculum, often by inviting prospective new students and their families to attend open houses and take tours of the facilities.

There are currently 18,000 students enrolled in the 36 Catholic elementary schools and the eight Catholic high schools of the diocese. In addition, there are four private Catholic schools located in the diocese serving a combined total several thousand more students.
