Two Arrested In RB For Illegal Firearm Possession

RED BANK - Two men, one a borough resident, the other from Lakewood, were arrested last week for possessing an unlawful loaded firearm.

Borough police last Wednesday arrested Pedro Aviles, 38, Lakewood, and Kevin McNair, Red Bank, last Wednesday following a vehicle and foot chase in the area of Newman Springs Road, according to Captain Stephen McCarthy, a police spokesman.

Detectives tried to stop a vehicle traveling on Newman Springs Road, when the driver quickly turned into a residence driveway, running from the vehicle while it was still moving.

The officers apprehended the alleged driver after a short foot chase, identifying him as Aviles.

While Aviles allegedly attempted to flee, police said McNair was still in the vehicle, along with a loaded pistol.

Police charged Aviles with unlawful possession of a handgun, certain persons not to have a handgun, resisting arrest and with criminal mischief, arising from when he allegedly damaged a fence in his attempt to allude capture, according to the spokesman.

Aviles was taken into custody and also faces charges from an outstanding contempt of court warrant from Neptune City Municipal Court, and a violation of probation warrant from the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office. Red Bank Municipal Court Judge William Himelman set Aviles' bail at $50,000 and Aviles was transported to Monmouth County Correctional Institution.

McNair was charged with unlawful possession of a handgun, certain persons not to have weapons, and was released on his own recognizance pending an initial court appearance for the charges, according to the police.

Police continue to investigate the origin of the weapon, according to McCarthy.
