Make the Ocean Free
Asbury Park - Business, diving, fishing, religious, and surfing organizations will rally on Wednesday, July 1 on the Asbury Park Boardwalk to celebrate a commitment to keeping the ocean wild and free from industry. The groups are urging all who enjoy or depend on a clean ocean to attend.
Clean Ocean Action, Langosta Lounge, and Asbury Park are hosting the free kickoff summer celebration, beach rally, paddle-out, and movie on Wednesday, July 1 on the Asbury Park Boardwalk starting at 4:30 p.m. to inspire and arouse citizens to act to protect the ocean. The event will also launch the 19th Annual Clean Ocean Action Shore Tips (C.O.A.S.T.)
Campaign, which educates and motivates citizens about ocean pollution issues. This year's focus is to fight three liquid natural gas terminal proposals and other polluting industries off the coast of New York and New Jersey.
"Asbury Park is honored to host the 2009 Ocean Independence Rally. As one of the top beaches on the Jersey Shore, we live the Clean Ocean Action mission and are proud to participate in the launch of the C.O.A.S.T. Campaign," said Tom Gilmour, director of commerce in Asbury Park.
"As an advocate for the ocean, and a Jersey Shore business owner, support and protection of our area's most precious natural resource is vital," said Marilyn Schlossbach, owner of Langosta Lounge. "We must respect and protect the benefits of coastal living and local economies; creating a natural symbiosis between our community and the sea that is free from environmental harm and adverse industries."
"In the past, the Jersey Shore was the ocean dumping capitol of the world and a laughing stock of the nation. We worked hard and because of our cleaner ocean we are a premier tourist destination, marine life is thriving, millions of families enjoy a day at the beach, and the tourism is New Jersey's economic safety net. The time is now to declare our ocean a pollution-free zone," said Cindy Zipf, executive director of Clean Ocean Action.
The Rally for Ocean Independence is on July 1 on the Asbury Park Boardwalk at Langosta Lounge, 1000 Ocean Ave. The press conference is at 4:30 p.m., beach rally and paddle-out at 5 p.m., food and drink specials from 6-7 p.m.; and Leonardo DiCaprio's The 11th Hour at 7 p.m. at the Carousel.
