By John Burton
RED BANK - Police are investigating an armed robbery occurring at a Shrewsbury Avenue jewelry store on Monday afternoon.
At approximately 2:15 p.m. police responded to a call from A Little Diamond, 108 Shrewsbury Avenue. According to Capt. Stephen McCarthy, a department spokesman, the storeowner told the investigating officers, he had arranged to meet with a potential customer who was interested in selling gold coins.
The owner addressed two men, one who perported to be the owner of the coins. During the course of the negotiations, the owner told the man he would have to conduct tests on the coins to determine their value.
The man became angry and objected to the test. He allegedly drew a handgun and demanded the agreed upon selling price from the owner, McCarthy said.
When the storeowner complied the man and his alleged accomplice fled the store.
The gun was not fired and no one was injured, according to McCarthy, who declined to say if the suspects took the coins with them.
The alleged suspect with the weapon was described as a black male, medium to dark complexion, between 40-50-years-old, medium build with a goatee beard, about 5-foot-7-inches tall.
He was wearing a baseball-style cap and a black jacket with large front pockets and a hood, according to police.
Police said the other man is also black, in his 40s, about 5-foot-7-or 8, medium build, and medium to dark complexion. The suspect was also wearing a grey hat with a full brim.
