Swearing In Ceremony A Family Affair In Highlands
HIGHLANDS - It was a family affair in this borough Thursday morning, as newly elected Councilman Chris Francy's nine grandchildren all held the Bible when he was sworn into his first term by Freeholder John D'Amico.
Francy, who won the seat with former Councilwoman Rebecca Kane, was joined by his wife and grandchildren who came from Washington, D.C., and Illinois to witness the oath of office. The children's mothers and their husbands, were in the audience with the Francy's third daughter Erin, who came from Iowa to join the family.
"This is awesome," said 14-year old Kelsey Roy of Washington, the eldest of the grandchildren, "it means a lot that my grandfather is a part of this huge circle of government that goes all the way to the President of the United States. He's there to try to improve Highlands as best as he can," she said, then quickly added, "even though already it's perfect as it is."
Kane, who was also sworn in by Freeholder D'Amico, was more emotional over her swearing in as fire chief than as councilwoman, although she is the first in the borough to hold both positions at the same time, and the first woman to ever be named Fire Chief. Her dad, Mattt held the Bible, and her brother, both former fire chiefs, together with outgoing Fire Chief Kevin Branin, were all present for the ceremony. Ms Kane's fiancé, Charlie Wells, also a volunteer fireman, held the Bible during the swearing-in.
