Saint James School Delivers In Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive
By Eleanor O'Sullivan
RED BANK - Saint James School showed its spirit of the season by raising more than even during its annual week long (November 10 through 17) Thanksgiving Food Drive sponsored and coordinated by student council members. The results were amazing! The outpouring of generosity allowed the students to create 46 'baskets', and cash donations over $650.00.
Organized by the student council and 3rd grade moderator Miss Kate Rooney, each class was asked to fill two laundry baskets with non- perishable food (appropriate for a Thanksgiving celebration) and paper products as well as making a monetary donation for 'turkey certificates'. The baskets were filled to the brim with goodies and staples, and were distributed to needy families in the area. What a great way to teach our children to share their good fortune with neighbors in need.
On November 21, our student council members loaded up all the baskets and boxes of food onto three vans and a truck from Saint Vincent de Paul and Project Paul. Both of these organizations support hungry families by purchasing, collecting and delivering food. The donations come at a time when area food pantry shelves are becoming bare. With high unemployment, homes foreclosing, and the bad economy, more people than ever are in need of food assistance.
