Cindy McCain Makes A Stop At RB's Broadway Diner
By John Burton
RED BANK - Three teenage girls go into a diner and run into Cindy McCain...
Yes, that Cindy McCain. The wife of U.S. Senator John McCain, the presumptive Republican candidate for president, visited the two- river area on Tuesday as part of a number of campaign stops she and her husband were conducting in the state.
Cindy McCain's itinerary involved stopping in the Broadway Diner, 45 Monmouth Street, accompanied by area GOP-elected officials and a pool of media members, where she greeted members of the public who were there to eat.
Among the lunchtime crowd were Allyson Jablonski, Shannon McNally and Megan Douty, all 15 and all from Fair Haven, who had the chance to meet and chat with someone who could be the next First Lady.
Later in the day the three girls talked about their meeting with McCain.
"She was really friendly," noted Shannon.
"I wouldn't expect her to be so nice," Allyson said. "I wouldn't think famous people would take the time to talk to us normal people."
McCain approached the girls' table and actually stopped and sat with the three for more than five minutes. "We talked about school," Shannon said, noting that McCain told the girls about her daughters, who are not that removed in age from these girls.
McCain autographed napkins for the three teens and posed for a number of photos with them, which were taken with the girls' cell phones.
"We were one of the only people she sat with for a while," Allyson said.
Afterwards people in the diner were telling the girls, "I can't believe she sat down with you guys," Megan said.
The three said their families were excited about their brush with a celebrity. But as for the girls' friends, "They probably wouldn't care," Shannon said.
The girls admitted they're really not that interested in politics, but two of them said their families were McCain supporters. "My family is divided," on the presidential race, Shannon acknowledged.
But all three said they support McCain, even before meeting Cindy.
"I always wanted McCain,' Allyson said.
Unfortunately for John and Cindy McCain, these three are too young to vote in November.
