By John Burton
RED BANK - A borough man took his own life at borough public school grounds late on Monday, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office.
On Tuesday First Assistant Prosecutor Peter E. Warshaw Jr. said at about 11 p.m. borough police received a call concerning a "suicidal individual" located at the Primary School parking lot, 222 River Street.
As police arrived, the individual at the scene shot himself, Warshaw said.
"Life-saving efforts were futile," Warshaw said. The victim was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, where he was pronounced dead at 11:45 p.m., according to the prosecutor's office.
The victim was identified as Russell P. Jackson, 22, who lived on River Street, Warshaw said.
"Every indication is that it's a suicide," the prosecutor said.
School officials were informed on Tuesday morning but it caused no disruption to school activities, according to Anne Darrow, the district's business administrator.
The district's Superintendent of Schools Laura C. Morana sent a letter home with students on Tuesday informing families of a "tragic event" occurring the previous evening. The letter made no direct reference to the events, but stated it had, "directly impacted several of our families."
